Crime Against Women: A True Fact Check

The crimes in India have been on the rise for the past decade. In such a scenario, women are also facing a rise in crime rates happening against them. The total crimes against women have seen a jump of almost 7000 from 2020 to 2022. According to the NCRB, most of these crimes are registered in the states while UTs have a minimal share.

Uttar Pradesh is the state with the highest number of crimes against women in India reaching up to 65000, followed by Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The northeastern states have performed much better in making women feel safe and protected with a low rate of crime against them. Nagaland has the lowest number of crimes against women accounting for only 49 which is lesser than its previous year's statistics of 54.

The Union territories have performed way better in favour of women. The capital of the country has 14247 cases of crime against women. Ladakh and Lakshadweep come lowest with 15 and 16 crimes among the Union territories and States. The total number of cases is still rising in many places but in comparison, the jump from 2020 to 2021 is much more than the change from 2021 to 2022.

The NCRB data of 2022 also provides a deeper insight into the reason behind the crimes against women. The cruelty by a husband or his relatives leads to the highest number of cases reported. The number of such cases reported last year was 140000. This itself explains the plight of the women living in a patriarchal structure such as that of India. The Indian women have also been abducted and kidnapped on a larger scale of 85310.

The next reason for the crimes against women, according to the report is assault with intent to outrage her modesty. Such cases account up to 83000 and women has to go through it more than the girls. The least cases related to women are for the buying of minor girls and selling of minor girls.

The problem with the justice system in India is the lack of fast courts and therefore there have been quite a lot of pending cases that get carried on from one year to the next. The NCRB Report of 2022 crime against women indicated that there are almost 200,000 cases pending investigation on from the previous year 2021.

In India, women enjoy a share of almost half of the population. In one of the biggest democracies of the world, half a percentage of women are going through such crimes or live in fear of them. Though the percentage of change in crimes against women is decreasing in India. However, the major North Indian states and UTs are seeing an increase in their crimes. At the same time, the reasons behind the cases of crime against women are increasing and getting out of proportion. What women need in our country is not just a better judiciary and legislature but also a better education system. The generation of tomorrow needs to be taught from today to respect and treat the other half of the population with dignity.
